Microbiotics, also known as ‘’friendly bacteria’’, are active live bacteria found in yoghurt, other dairy products and in supplement form that help restore and maintain healthy intestinal flora. Microbiotics can alter the composition of organisms in the gut microbiome. Prebiotics are non-digestible plant fibre that nourishes the growth of good bacteria in the large intestine or colon. While microbiotics introduce good bacteria into the gut, prebiotics act as a fertilizer for the good bacteria that’s already there. Examples of prebiotics are: oats, bananas, garlic, onion, leek, asparagus, sauerkraut, Jerusalem artichokes and chicory root.
