Congratulations to Udo's sponsored World Champion Helen Jenkins who continued her brilliant start to 2012 with another winning performance at the World Triathlon Series event in San Diego.
After being part of an eight woman breakaway on the 40km bike ride, Helen and Australia’s Erin Densham went to the lead into the first lap of the 10km run. Helen pushed hard on the second half of the run where she managed to take the lead, from almost 10 meters behind Erin. This terrific performance saw Helen record a time of 1 hour 58 minutes and 21 seconds, over a minute ahead of Erin’s time of 1:59:26.
Helen said it was a hard race but the support on the run had helped her through:
“It was just such a good race,” she said. “We really had to work really hard for that. I really pushed the swim and we really worked hard on the bike and that was hard all the way. I really enjoyed the run course, it was really cool, there was so many people out there supporting - it was awesome.”
“The British coaches were out there, the support staff and my husband and they all really helped.”
Helen also added: “Everything is going really well, - I’ve just got to keep it in perspective, get home and get back into my training and keep focused on London.”
Helen’s impressive performance consolidates her position as favourite for gold at this year’s London Olympics – well done Helen!
America’s Laura Bennett claimed third, her first series podium. Vicky Holland was the next best-placed Briton in fifth, with fellow British athletes Non Stanford (21) Lois Rosindale (30), Vanessa Raw (37) and Jodie Stimpson (45) further down the field.
The athletes travel to Madrid for the next round of the World Triathlon Series on 26-27 May.
