Driffield hosted the second of the Udo’s Choice Triathlon Race Series on Sunday 20th May. With cool, overcast and breezy weather the event saw a somewhat 180 competitors take part, 28 of which were from the Driffield area.
The event was won by local man Ryan Hepworth of We Love Mountains Racing Team in a time of 53 minutes. Ryan broke the course record of 55 minutes 29 seconds set last year by Steve Clark of the Lincsquad Team. Last year Ryan finished 6th in a time of 57mins 45secs giving him a 4 minutes 45 second improvement second time round– well done Ryan!
Second place winner Phil Goode of All Terrain Cycles finished just 18 seconds behindRyan. David Thomas of York Triathlon Club took third place in a time of 54 minutes 29 seconds. Congratulations to all three for a terrific race.
Fastest female coming in at 62 minutes 21 seconds was Rachel Mellor of Holmfirth Harriers Triathlon. Second place went to Clare Stonehouse of Leeds & Bradford Triathlon Club, closely followed by Becky Hughes of NYP Tri Club in third with extremely close times of 1:06:55 and 1:07:00. Fastest local lady was Alison Crellin of Wetwang (a village 5 miles from Driffield) in a time of 1hr 12mins 18secs. A great performance from these four females.
Oldest competitor was Bob Johnston from Bradford in a time of 1hr 12mins 37secs whilst youngest competitor was Libby Greatorex of Wakefield Triathlon Club who finished in a time of 1hr 9mins 12secs. Well done to you both.
The Driffield lady, who had lost 12 stone in weight prior to competing in the Triathlon, was Pam Stanforth representing the “Wolds Way to Health” club in a time of 1hr 39mins 14secs to finish 165th.
The Udos Choice Triathlon Race Series moves onto Allerthorpe by York on 17th June for an open water swim triathlon – again a sprint distance of 750:20:5 so if you are a novice or a veteran of the sport and would like to compete in this very popular event please visit www.freebirdevents.co.uk
